Yvette Clarke (NY-9) introduced a new resolution to designate the month of September as the “National African Immigrant Heritage Month.” This resolution honors the numerous contributions of Americans of African immigrant heritage that have enriched and advanced our nation.

Bronx, NY -  Today, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Ritchie Torres announced FEMA reimbursement of $620 million to NYC Health + Hospitals (H +H). This reimbursement follows the $260 million previously allocated to H+H earlier this year. The most recent commitment from FEMA brings the total reimbursement to $880 million. The system of 11 Hospitals across New York City have been waiting for this reimbursement from FEMA since October 2020.

Washington, D.C. — Today Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15) called on Democratic leaders to make the expanded Child Tax Credit created by the American Rescue Plan permanent. Rep. Torres was joined by advocates from Children’s Defense Fund, Fighting Chance for Families and a Bronx Resident and New York Beat the Odds Scholar and Youth Advocate to detail the importance of a permanent Child Tax Credit.

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Ritchie Torres and 19 of his House and Senate colleagues released a letter to Congressional leadership advocating to fully fund President Biden’s request to include a minimum of $30 billion in the Congressional infrastructure package to prepare for potential future pandemics. The letter was co-led in the Senate by Senators Warren and Padilla.

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Ritchie Torres voted to include $9,113,095 in a government funding package for eight community projects and organizations that service the South Bronx. The  seven-bill government funding package (HR 4502) passed the House. This essential piece of legislation will improve the health and financial security of American families while also investing in clean energy, public health and education to set America up for future success. The package now moves to the Senate for consideration. Rep. Torres’ approved funding would go to the following projects:

WASHINGTON DC - Today, Rep. Ritchie Torres’ (NY-15)  DHS Software Supply Chain Risk Management Act of 2021 (H.R. 4611) passed the House Homeland Security Committee. The bill would require DHS to develop guidelines for identifying materials used in software development. Specifically, the legislation directs DHS to modernize its information and communication technology or services acquisitions process by requiring the Under Secretary for Management to issue Department-wide guidance to require DHS contractors to submit software bills of materials (SBOM) that identify the origins of each component of the software furnished to DHS.

Bronx, NY: Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15)  today was joined by advocates for affordable housing and the homeless to announce the details of new federal legislation to combat homelessness and the rise in unaffordable rents across the country. The legislation, Ending Homelessness Act of 2021, would expand eligibility to Section 8 vouchers, make more vouchers available to cities, and make housing rental assistance available to all eligible Americans within a decade. Housing vouchers are an effective tool to ensure families can afford to live in their neighborhoods and combat the homelessness crisis. The new legislation is co-sponsored by House Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D, CA-43) and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D, MO-5).

WASHINGTON  - Today, Rep. Torres applauded House passage of the “Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation in America (INVEST in America) Act,” which includes funding for transit projects in the South Bronx. Rep. Torres fought to ensure the projects were included in the INVEST in America Act, which makes transformational investments in America’s highways, roads, bridges, transit, rail, and water infrastructure to create jobs, modernize our infrastructure and reduce carbon pollution. This legislation puts some of the key pieces of President Biden’s infrastructure vision into legislative text.
