Today, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) and Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15) released the following joint statement:

“Robert Moses’ Cross Bronx Expressway has long been a scar on the South Bronx, cutting off local communities and choking residents nearby with some of the worst air pollution and asthma rates in the country. Since 2021, we have worked together to fund this critical study, including the possibility of capping the expressway, on behalf of improving the borough that has been consistently forgotten. Today’s final report lays the foundation to reimagine and cap the expressway, reconnect our neighborhoods, and bring home long-overdue investments in clean air and green space through initiatives like constructing pedestrian and bicycle crossings. For years, we have fought to right the wrongs of Robert Moses, and are proud to report: promises made, promises kept.

“This is just the beginning. The Bronx has waited long enough, and we won’t stop fighting until this vision becomes reality. We will push for every federal dollar needed to right this historic wrong and ensure the Bronx gets the investment, beneficial infrastructure and respect it deserves.”
