NYC landmark voting rights bill could pave way for ranked-choice voting nationwide

Ranked-choice voting, the balloting method debuting this year in New York City, could eventually come to federal elections, under legislation from Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres.

As part of the landmark voting rights bill passed in the House of Representatives this week, the U.S. Government Accountability Office would study how ranked-choice voting impacts “voter turnout, negative campaigning and who decides to run for office” — a possible first step toward taking the process nationwide.
