WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres (NY-15) tonight issued the following statement upon the conclusion of President Biden’s State of the Union address to Congress:

“Tonight, President Biden very clearly laid out for the American people an outline of how he is delivering on an economic plan to grow our economy from the bottom up and the middle out, giving every working family a fair shot and leaving no one behind. Under his transformational leadership, we’ve seen the creation of 12 million new jobs, the lowest unemployment rate in half a century, the fastest manufacturing rebound in 40 years, record investments in infrastructure, more affordable and accessible healthcare and prescription drug prices, and the two strongest years of small business applications in history.

I’m proud of the many accomplishments President Biden and Congressional Democrats have achieved for the American people these past two years. And even though I believe the state of our union is strong, our hard-fought progress is facing an existential threat from MAGA Republicans who are hell-bent on holding the economy hostage in attempt to defund Social Security and Medicare in favor of tax cuts for the wealthy. Democrats are committed to standing up to this extreme, radical agenda and political dysfunction to protect the American people and defend our hard-fought values and freedoms.

I look forward to continuing to work with President Biden and his Administration to build on our tremendous track record of success and am encouraged by the commitment he demonstrated tonight to making our communities safer, passing an assault weapons ban, codifying reproductive rights into law, supporting better paying jobs, standing up for the middle class, bringing costs down and fighting inflation, strengthening our supply chain, investing in housing, workforce development, and early childhood education, fighting the climate crisis, and asserting our leadership on the world stage.
Together, let’s finish the job.”
